In preparation for an upcoming business trip across Asia, I’ve been collecting small, portable tools, that might make long days of meetings run more smoothly (little helpers, if you will).My plan for this device was straightforward: record my business meetings, have them transcribed into English for my own records, and then... have the transcription translated into the native language of my colleagues. I pictured it as a really useful follow-up... and perhaps, a small professional courtesy... that could leave a good and lasting impression. :)On first glance, the hardware is impressive. It really is no thicker than a credit card, and the strong magnetic ring means it can hold securely to a shirt pocket, sleeve, or phone without drawing attention. Light, discreet, and easy to carry... exactly what I thought I needed and wanted.But the fine print changes the picture a bit. The product page mentions two different continuous recording times: 35 hours in one place, 40 in another... but after the first year, usage is tied to a subscription plan.You begin year two with 300 minutes per month (about 5 hours), and more time must be purchased separately. The “Premium” plan runs $239.88 annually, and based on the description, appears to offer less than the first year’s included features.One aspect I hadn’t thought about a lot: among its advertised uses, is the ability to magnetically attach the recorder to your phone to capture calls. At first blush, this sounds like a really convenient and useful additional aspect of the device's usability. However, while this is lawful in some U.S. states, my own research led me to learn that in Florida, where I live, recording a phone call without first receiving the consent of all parties... is classified as a third degree felony, which can carry serious legal consequences. It’s important for users to be aware of the laws in their location, and I was surprised I didn't find this mentioned anywhere on the product page.The design and battery life are excellent, and for users in regions where its full feature set can be used within the law, it could be a very handy tool. For me, the ongoing cost, limited second year use, and lack of information regarding applicable state laws are important considerations to keep in mind... and I will.Sometimes... what looks like a clever travel companion turns out to be the kind of guest you’d rather not bring along.
